TermDefinition
Heredity The passing of traits from parents to offspring
Gene factors that control traits
Alleles The different forms of a genes
Homozygous (Purebred) An organism that has that has 2 of the same alleles for a trait.
Heterozygous (Hybrid) An organism with 2 different alleles for a trait
Trait a characteristic
Genetics The study of heredity
Phenotype The way the organism looks
Genotype The genetic makeup or combination of alleles in a organism
Dominant Allele The allele that always shows up in a organism even when the other allele is present.
Recessive Allele The allele that is hidden when ever the dominant allele is present
Punnet Square The way to figure out what your phenotype and genotype is for a specific trait. (You need to know you parents genotypes to find yours)
Acquired trait A trait an organism develops afters it is born
Inherited trait A trait that was passed down to you
Environmental (example) A Flamingo is pink because it eats pink food
Manipulated (example) The coiling of bamboo because it was created by humans. (breeding animals to get the most desirable trait)
Learned (example) The ability to ride a skateboard by learning and remembering skills and imformation
