| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Allele | one of two or more alternative forms of a gene that arise by mutation and are found at the same place on a chromosome. |
| Trait | a distinguishing quality or characteristic, typically one belonging to a person |
| Gene | a unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring. |
| Chromosome | a threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most living cells, carrying genetic information in the form of genes. |
| DNA | deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes. It is the carrier of genetic information. |
| Heterozygous | having dissimilar alleles at corresponding chromosomal |
| recessive | relating to or denoting heritable characteristics controlled by genes that are expressed in offspring only when inherited from both parents |
| dihybrid | a hybrid that is heterozygous for alleles of two different genes |
| cross | Mating of two organisms |
| Dominate | Allele that is expressed when two different alleles are present in an organisms genotype |
| Genotype | Collection of all of an organism's genetic information that codes for traits |
| Homozygous | Characteristic of having two of the same alleles at the same locus of sister chromatids |
| Monohybrid | Cross, or matting, between organisms that involves only one pair of contrasting traits |
| Genome | All of an organisms genetic material |
| Purebred | Type of organism whose ancestors are genetically uniform |
| Phenotype | Collection of all of an organisms physical characteristics |
| Homologous | Chromosomes that have the same length, appearance, and copies of genes, although the alleles may differ |
| Incomplete dominance | Heterozygous phenotype that is a blend of the two homozygous phenotype |
| Codominance | Heterozygous genotype that equally expresses the traits from both alleles |
| Carrier | Organism whose genome contains a gene for a certain trait or disease tats is not expressed in the organism's phenotype |
