| Allele | Alternative forms of a gene that places on chromasomes |
| Recessive | Allele that is not expressed unless 2 copies are present |
| Monohybrid | a cross between one trait |
| Trait | Characteristic that is inherited |
| Dihybrid | a cross between two traits |
| Genome | the full complement of genetic information that an organism inherits from its parents |
| Gene | basic unit of heredity: the basic unit capable of transmitting characteristics from one generation to the next |
| Cross | Mating of two organisms |
| Purebred | having ancestors that belong to the same breed or variety as a result of controlled breeding |
| Chromasome | carries the genes that determine sex and the characteristics an organism inherits from its parents |
| Dominant | expressing same characteristic in offspring: describes a gene that causes a parental characteristic it controls to occur in any offspring, or describes the characteristic itself |
| Phenotype | visible characteristics of organism: the visible characteristics of an organism resulting from the interaction between its genetic makeup and the environment |
| DNA | substance carrying organism's genetic information: a nucleic acid molecule in the form of a twisted double strand double helix that is the major component of chromosomes and carries genetic information |
| Genotype | genetic makeup: the genetic makeup of an organism, as opposed to its physical characteristics phenotype |
| Heterozygous | having genetic variants: describes a cell or organism that has two or more different versions alleles of at least one of its genes |
| Homozygous | having two identical genes: having two identical genes at the corresponding loci of homologous chromosomes |
| Homologus | having the same or allelic genes with genetic loci usually arranged in the same order |
