| How does blood defence against Disease? | The blood destroys harmful bacteria and viruses. Also the blood can clot when we cut ourselves, This prevents loss of blood and keeps out harmful bacteria or viruses. |
| How does blood hep us keep our constant body temperature? | Chemical reactions that take place in our cells produce heat energy. The heat carries the heat all around the body. |
| What is the composition of blood? | a liquid called plasma, 3 types of blood cells:red blood cells, white blood cells and the platelets. |
| What does our circulatory system consists of? | blood, blood vessels and the heart. |
| What is blood plasma? | Blood plasma is a straw- coloured liquid. Its made up of water and dissolved substances. |
| What is the function of the plasma? | The function of the plasma is to transport substances and heat. |
| Where do red blood cells get their name from? | They get their name from the red pigment called haemoglobin found inside the cell. |
| What is the function of the red blood cell? | The function of the red blood cell is to transport oxygen. |
| What is the function of the white blood cell? | The function of white blood cells is to fight disease. |
| What are platelets? | Platelets are tiny fragments of larger cells. |
| What is the function of platelets? | The function of platelets is to clot the blood. |
| How many types of blood vessels are there? | 3 types. Arteries, veins and capillaries. |
| arteries | Arteries carry blood away from the heart. |
| veins | Veins carry blood to the heart. |
| capillaries | Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that link the arteries and veins. |
| What is the heart? | The heart is pump which pushes blood into the arteries. |
| How big is the heart? | The heart is about the size of your clenched fist. |
| Where is the heart situated? | It lies between the lungs in the chest. |
| What are the walls of the heart made up? | The walls of the heart are made of cardiac muscle. |
| What is the function of the heart? | The function of the heart is to pump blood around the body. |
| What is the structure of the heart? | The heart consists of 4 chambers. 2 atria (one atrium) at the top, one left and one right; and 2 ventricles at the bottom, one left and one right. |
| What separates the left side of the heart from the right? | The left side of the heart is separated from the right side by a muscular wall called the septum. |
| What do valves do? | Valves in the heart stop the backflow of blood. |
| What are the main arteries and veins attached to the heart? | The aorta, pulmonary artery, vena cava and the pulmonary vein. |
| How does the heart pump the blood? | Blood flows through the veins into both atria at the same time. Blood from the head, arms, legs and other parts of the body enters the right atrium through the vena cava. This blood is low in oxygen. |
| What is the pulse rate? | The average adult heart beats about 70 times per minute at rest. Pulse rates vary depending upon a persons age, sex, health and how fit they are. |
