Chapter 6

TermDefinition
Reactant a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.
Product an article or substance that is manufactured or refined for sale.
Chemical energy that part of the energy in a substance that can be released by a chemical reaction
Exothermic reaction a chemical reaction accompanied by the evolution of heat
Endothermic reaction a chemical reaction accompanied by the absorption of heat
synthesis reaction A synthesis reaction or direct combination reaction is one of the most common types of chemical reactions.
Decomposition reaction analysis or breakdown is the separation of a chemical compound into elements or simpler compounds
Electrolysis chemical decomposition produced by passing an electric current through a liquid or solution containing ions.
Combustion reaction A combustion reaction is a reaction in which one of the reactants is oxygen.
Single-displacement reaction A displacement reaction is a type of reaction where part of one reactant is replaced by another reactant.
Double-displacement reaction A salt metathesis reaction, sometimes called a double replacement reaction, is a chemical process involving the exchange of bonds between two reacting chemical species,
Oxidation-reduction reaction Redox reactions include all chemical reactions in which atoms have their oxidation state changed
Radical a group of atoms behaving as a unit in a number of compounds.
Chemical equation A chemical equation is the symbolic representation of a chemical reaction wherein the reactant entities are given on the left-hand side and the product entities on the right-hand side.
Mole ratio A mole ratio is ratio between the amounts in moles of any two compounds involved in a chemical reaction.
mole Mole is a unit of measurement used in chemistry to express amounts of a chemical substance,
Avogadro's constant In chemistry and physics, the Avogadro constant is defined as the number of constituent particles per mole of a given substance,
Molar mass In chemistry, the molar mass M is a physical property. It is defined as the mass of a given substance divided by its amount of substance
Conversion factor an arithmetical multiplier for converting a quantity expressed in one set of units into an equivalent expressed in another.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
