Plant vocabulary from chapter 2 of Purposeful Designs Science, Level 3

botanist a scientist who studies plants.
botany the study of plants.
flower the part of a plant that makes new plants.
root carries water and nutrients to the leaves.
roots holds the plant in the ground.
leaf collects sunlight and air to make food for the plant.
oxygen a colorless, odorless gas in the air that is needed by most living things to stay alive..
carbon dioxide a colorless, odorless gas in the air that people and animals breathe out of their lungs.
photosynthesis the process green plants use to make food from water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide.
chlorophyll a green coloring in plants that captures the sun's energy.
microscope an instrument that uses lenses and light to make it easier for people to see small objects.
microscopic something to small to be seen without the use of a microscope.
cell membrane the thin covering of a cell.
nucleus the control center of a cell.
cytoplasm jelly-like material that fills the inside of a plant cell.
cell wall the stiff layer outside the cell membrane of a plant cell.
chloroplasts tiny green parts inside the plant cell.
pollinator an insect or other animal that carries pollen to the pistil.
petals the outside parts of a flower that attracts a pollinator.
stamen the part of the flower that produces pollen.
pollen the fine powder in a flower that is needed to make seeds.
pistil the part of a flower where seeds are formed.
pollenation the process by which pollen is carried to the pistil of a flower.
plant propegation using a part of a plant to increase the number of that plant.
germinate to begin to grow.
plant cutting the parts of a plant such as a leaf, stem, or root that can grow to make another plant.
plant division splitting apart a plant to produce new plants.
heredity the passing of characteristics from parent to offspring.
hybrid a plant that has parents of different varieties or kinds.
