Cell Cycle Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Chromosome A structure made of DNA that is found in the nuclei of all eukaryotic cells
Centromere The point in the middle of a replicated chromosome where 2 sister comatids meet
Chromatin Uncondensed DNA that looks liek spaghetti in a nucleus
Sister Chromatin Half of a replicated chromosome; contains identical DNA as the other half
Binary Fission The process of cell reproduction used by simpler organisms like prokaryotes
Cell Cycle The process of cell reproduction used by more complex organisms like eukaryotes; consisits of interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis
Centrioles Tube- like structures found in the centrosome that produced the spindles
Centrosome The region in a cell containing the centrioles
Spindle Rope-like structures that are produced by the centrioles and are responsible for separating sister chromatids from each other during mitosis
Metastasis When cancer gets into the bloodstream and establishes new tumor sites at new locations in the body; tissue invasion
Malignant Tumors that are more likely to threaten life and spread throughout the body
Benign Tumors that are less likey to threaten life or spread throughout the body
Clevage Furrow Forms only in animal cells during cytokinesis when cytoplasm splits in half
Daughter Cells The two cells that are produced at the end of binary fission or mitosis; are identical to each other
Cyclins Proteins that are responsible for internal control of the cell cycle
Carcinogen Any substance that is capable of causing cancer
