Cell Cycle Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chromosome | A structure made of DNA that is found in the nuclei of all eukaryotic cells |
| Centromere | The point in the middle of a replicated chromosome where 2 sister comatids meet |
| Chromatin | Uncondensed DNA that looks liek spaghetti in a nucleus |
| Sister Chromatin | Half of a replicated chromosome; contains identical DNA as the other half |
| Binary Fission | The process of cell reproduction used by simpler organisms like prokaryotes |
| Cell Cycle | The process of cell reproduction used by more complex organisms like eukaryotes; consisits of interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis |
| Centrioles | Tube- like structures found in the centrosome that produced the spindles |
| Centrosome | The region in a cell containing the centrioles |
| Spindle | Rope-like structures that are produced by the centrioles and are responsible for separating sister chromatids from each other during mitosis |
| Metastasis | When cancer gets into the bloodstream and establishes new tumor sites at new locations in the body; tissue invasion |
| Malignant | Tumors that are more likely to threaten life and spread throughout the body |
| Benign | Tumors that are less likey to threaten life or spread throughout the body |
| Clevage Furrow | Forms only in animal cells during cytokinesis when cytoplasm splits in half |
| Daughter Cells | The two cells that are produced at the end of binary fission or mitosis; are identical to each other |
| Cyclins | Proteins that are responsible for internal control of the cell cycle |
| Carcinogen | Any substance that is capable of causing cancer |
