| Term | Definition |

| Energy | The ability to do work or cause change. |
| Potential energy | Energy that is stored and waiting to be used later. |
| Kinetic energy | The energy an object has due to its motion. |
| Abrasion | The wearing away of rock by grinding action |
| Slope | The amount a river drops towards sea level. |
| Volume of flow | What moves past a point on the river in a given time. |
| Streambed shape | Affects the amount of friction between water and the streambed. |
| Friction | The force that opposes the motion of one surface as it moves across another surface. |
| Turbulence | A type of movement of water in which, rather than moving downstream, the water moves every which way. |
