TermDefinition
Conservation Is the protection and careful management of our natural resources
How are humans endangering nature? 1) Much of our wildlife is killed when we clear land 2) Insecticides used to kill pests on crops can also kill useful insects 3) Over fishing means that fisher men catch all fish young and old and the fish then cant breed
What can humans do to help? -the government need to consider the environment before planning to build new roads or development -Zoos are encouraged to join breeding programmes - Join local conservation groups and join conservation activities like cleaning up local habitats
- Annual garden and bird watch surveys to keep track of the bird population -Obey the country code
Pollution Is the addition of harmful substances to the environment
Three types of pollution 1)Air 2)water 3)Soil
Summary of air pollution: Smoke and dust irritates the lining of the bronchi
Sulphur dioxide Prevent plants from photosynthesising. If mixed with rain causes acid rain that kills plants and wears away old buildings
carbon monoxide and lead poisons humans
CFCs Reduces the ozone layer and the UV light that gets in causes cancer
Summary of water pollution: excess of fertiliser and slurry Less oxygen, causing fish to die
Untreated sewage Decomposers use up the oxygen, causing fish to die
oil poisonous to birds and fish. coats feathers preventing flight. unsightly to beaches
litter unsightly and can be a health hazard
Soil pollution when pesticides and excess of fertilisers get in to the soil. Chemicals from factories and dumps can cause soil pollution
waste management Is the way we deal with our waste
How to deal with waste 1) Burned with an incinerator 2) put into landfill sites 3)recycled
1) landfill sites is a huge hole in the ground where waste is compressed and the buried into the ground
Advantages - the methane that is produced by the rotting waste can be used as fuel - it is convenient
Disadvantages -badly managed sites can be unsightly and smell and attract rats -poisonous chemicals can seep into the ground and effect water supplies -we are running out of space for these dumps
Incineration Advantages - it can take huge volumes - its clean and efficient - it doesn't use up much land space
disadvantages - it produces poisonous fumes - it also produces huge quantities of ash that has to be removed
recycling reduce: reduce the amount of waste produced in the first place reuse: use again for a different purpose recycle: recover for reuse
Advantages - environmentally friendly - it also saves money and energy
disadvantages - some material brought to bring banks are not reusable and have to be put into landfill sites either here or abroad
Positive human activities on the environment - Protecting the habitats and environments of plants and animals - implementing inti-pollution and waste management laws to reduce the effects that pollution and waste have on the planet
Negative human activities on the environment - destroying habitats - releasing fossil fuels that contributes to global warming
