work, energy, and power

| work | the use of force to move an object some distance in the direction of the foce. |
| energy | the ability to do work. |
| power | the rate at which work is done. |
| kinetic energy | the energy of motion. |
| potential energy | the energy an object has because of its postion, conditions, or chemical composition. |
| mechanical energy | the energy possessed by an object due to its motion and position. |
| machine | any device that helps people do work by changing the way work is done. |
| mechancial advantage | the number of times the mechine multiplies the input force. |
| mechanical effciency | a comparison of a machine's work output with the work input. |
| lever | a simple machine that has a bar that pivots at a fixed point. |
| fulcrum | the fixed point. |
| wheel and axle | a simple machine that is made of a wheel connected to a smaller cylindrical object, the axle |
| pulley | a simple machine that has a grooved wheel that holds a rope or a cable. |
| inclined plane | a simple machine that is a starght, slanted surface. |
