The Life of a Star
Notes on stars.
| Steps/Terms | Notes/Definitions |
|---|---|
| Step 1: Nebulae & Protostars | A cloud of dust and gas in space is a nebula. The dust and gases get compressed by the force of gravity and their density slowly increases. A protostar begins to form out of a nebula. |
| Step 2: Main-Sequence Stars | A main sequence star is a star that is fusing hydrogen into helium. The main sequence star is often called the "adult" form of a star. These stars are extremely stable and can be just about any color of the rainbow. (Red, orange, yellow, green, & blue) |
| Step 3A: Super Giants | Super giants have masses of 10 or more times the Sun and luminosities from 30,000 to over a million times the Sun. |
| Step 3B: Red Giant Stars | Super giant - A star that uses up the supply of hydrogen at its core and expands. |
| Step 4A: Supernovas | A supernova is an explosion that rips the star apart near the end of its life. |
