Biology Chapter 24 V
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Invertebrate | Animals without backbones |
| Exoskeleton | Hard or tough outer coverings that provide a framework of support. |
| Endoskeleton | Internal skeletons |
| Vertebrate | With a backbone |
| Hermaphrodite | Produce both eggs and sperm in the same animal body. |
| Zygote | A fertilized egg cell. |
| Internal fertilization | When the sperm and egg combine inside the animals body. |
| External fertilization | When egg and sperm combine outside the animals body. |
| Blastula | The cells continue to divide forming a fluid-filled ball of cells. |
| Gastrula | A two-cell-layer sac with an opening at one end. |
| Endoderm | The inner layer of cells in the gastrula. |
| Ectoderm | The outer layer of cells in the gastrula. |
| Mesoderm | A layer of cells forms between the endoderm and the ectoderm. |
| Symmetry | Describes the similarity or balance among body structures of organisms. |
| Radial symmetry | Can be divided along any plane, through a central axis, into roughly equal halves. |
| Bilateral symmetry | The animal can be divided into mirror image halves only along one plane through the central axis. |
| Anterior | Head end |
| Posterior | Tail end |
| Cephalization | The tendency to concentrate nervous tissue and sensory organs at the anterior end of the animal. |
| Dorsal | Surface, also called the backside. |
| Ventral | Surface, also called the underside or belly. |
| Coelom | One type of fluid-filled cavity. |
| Pseudocoelom | Is a fluid-filled body cavity that develops between the mesoderm and the endoderm rather than developing entirely within the mesoderm as in coelomates. |
| Acoelomate | Animals that do not have a coelom. |
| Protostome | The mouth develops from the first opening in the gastrula. |
| Deuterostome | The anus develops from the first opening in the gastrula. |
| Filter feeder | When an organism such as a sponge gets its food by filtering small particles from water. |
| Sessile | They are attached to and stay in one place. |
| Cnidocytes | Stinging cells. |
| Nematocyst | A capsule that holds a coiled, threadlike tube containing poison and barbs. |
| Gastrovascular cavity | The inner cell layer of cnidarians surrounds a space. |
| Nerve net | Conducts impulses to and from all parts of the body. |
| Polyp | A tube-shaped body and mouth surrounded by tentacles. |
| Medusa | An umbrella-shaped body and tentacles that hang down. |
