| Term | Definition |

| fossil fuels | oil, coal, and gas that are natural resources that are non-renewable |
| alternative energy | other sources of energy we could use that would be renewable such as biofuel, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, or wind |
| biofuel energy | fuel that comes from biomass (which is recently living organism or their byproducts) such as manure |
| geothermal energy | heat from within the Earth - we use this form of energy from digging deep wells and pumping the heated underground water or steam to the surface |
| hydroelectric energy | generates electricity by harnessing the power of moving water |
| solar energy | energy received from the sun |
| wind energy | harnessing the wind by using turbines or windmills |
| renewable resource | can be replaced within a relatively short period of time |
| nonrenewable resource | are limited in supply and once they are used they can't be replaced |
| conservation | protection of things found in nature |
