Weathering

TermDefinition
topsoil This layer is usually loose and crumbly with varying amounts of organic matter.
mechanical weathering The process of rocks being broken down into smaller pieces by external conditions.
parent rock This refers to the minerals and organic materials present during the soil’s formation. Refers to the original rock from which something else was formed.
carbonic acid dissolves minerals in rock
soil is made of loose, weathered rock and organic material.
ice wedging When it rains, water seeps into these joints. As water freezes into ice, it expands.
weathering a chemical reaction between water and another substance to form two or more new substances;a reaction between water and a salt to create an acid or a base.
erosion is greater on the outside of the bend, deposition more on the inside.
hydrolysis the chemical breakdown of a compound due to reaction with water..
soil profile In a cross-section of soil, various zones are formed.
porosity The percentage of the total volume of a rock or sediment that consists of open spaces
permeability the ability of a rock or sediment to let fluids pass through its open spaces, or pores
aquifer a body or rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater
humus dark, organic material formed in soil from the decayed remains of plants and animals
delta a fan-shaped mass of rock material at the mouth of a stream; for example, deltas form where streams flow into the ocean at the edge of a continent
artesian well Wells in which water rises out of an aquifer under pressure.
geyser is a hot spring that erupts periodically, shooting water and steam into the air.
karst topography type of topography that contains: caverns, sinkholes, and underground drainage and that forms on limestone or other soluble rock.
stalactites Formed by water that drops from the top of the cave that contains calcite
stalagmites Form from the bottom of the cave
sinkhole is a depression on the ground of the ground that forms when the roof of a cave collapses, or when rock near the surface dissolves.
shallow wells go dry due to excessive pumping
cone of depression Where the water is depressed down around a well.
