| topsoil | This layer is usually loose and crumbly with varying amounts of organic matter. |
| mechanical weathering | The process of rocks being broken down into smaller pieces by external conditions. |
| parent rock | This refers to the minerals and organic materials present during the soil’s formation. Refers to the original rock from which something else was formed. |
| carbonic acid | dissolves minerals in rock |
| soil | is made of loose, weathered rock and organic material. |
| ice wedging | When it rains, water seeps into these joints. As water freezes into ice, it expands. |
| weathering | a chemical reaction between water and another substance to form two or more new substances;a reaction between water and a salt to create an acid or a base. |
| erosion | is greater on the outside of the bend, deposition more on the inside. |
| hydrolysis | the chemical breakdown of a compound due to reaction with water.. |
| soil profile | In a cross-section of soil, various zones are formed. |
| porosity | The percentage of the total volume of a rock or sediment that consists of open spaces |
| permeability | the ability of a rock or sediment to let fluids pass through its open spaces, or pores |
| aquifer | a body or rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater |
| humus | dark, organic material formed in soil from the decayed remains of plants and animals |
| delta | a fan-shaped mass of rock material at the mouth of a stream; for example, deltas form where streams flow into the ocean at the edge of a continent |
| artesian well | Wells in which water rises out of an aquifer under pressure. |
| geyser | is a hot spring that erupts periodically, shooting water and steam into the air. |
| karst topography | type of topography that contains: caverns, sinkholes, and underground drainage and that forms on limestone or other soluble rock. |
| stalactites | Formed by water that drops from the top of the cave that contains calcite |
| stalagmites | Form from the bottom of the cave |
| sinkhole | is a depression on the ground of the ground that forms when the roof of a cave collapses, or when rock near the surface dissolves. |
| shallow wells | go dry due to excessive pumping |
| cone of depression | Where the water is depressed down around a well. |
