Science Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Interact When plants and animals work together with the environment to get what they need.
Producer A living thing that makes its own food.
Consumer A living thing that eats other living things as food.
Herbivores A consumer that only eats plants.
Carnivore Animals that only eat meat.
Omnivore Animals that eat both plants and animals.
Decomposers A living thing that breaks down dead things for food.
Food chain Shows the path of energy from one living thing to another.
Energy pyramid Shows that the amount of usable energy in an ecosystem is less for each higher animal in the food chain.
Food web A model that shows how food chains overlap.
Predator An animal that hunts another animal for food.
Prey An animal that is being hunted.
