QRES Light and Sound

Terms for Light and Sound Unit

TermDefinition
vibration A quick back-and-forth movement of matter
volume The loudness of a sound.
pitch How high or low a sound is.
frequency The number of vibrations per second.
reflection The bouncing of light off an object.
refraction The bending of light as it moves from one material to another.
translucent Allowing only some light to pass through.
transparent Allowing to pass through.
opaque Not allowing light to pass through.
concave lens A lens that is thicker at the edges than in the middle.
convex lens A lens that is thicker in the middle than at the edges.
Amplitude The height of a sound wave
Loudness/softness Volume of a sound
Sound A form of energy that travels through the air. Cannot travel through empty space.
Sound Waves The way sound travels in an up and down motion.
Tone A musical sound having a definite pitch
Wavelength The length of the wave, the distance from crest to crest.
Light A form of energy that travels in straight lines. It can travel through empty space.
Prism A transparent solid body that is used to spread light into a spectrum of colors.
Rainbow Water Droplets in the air act like tiny prisms.
