Chapter 22 Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Parenchyma cell | Most flexible, thin-walled cells found throughout a plant. |
| Collenchyma cell | Plant cells that often are elongated and occur in long stands or cylinders that provide support for the surrounding cells. |
| Sclerenchyma cell | Plant cells that lack cytoplasm and other living components when they mature, but their thick rigid cell walls remain. |
| Meristem | Regions of rapidly dividing cells. |
| Vascular cambium | A thin cylinder of meristematic tissue that can run the entire length of roots and stems. |
| Cork cambium | Produces cells that develop tough cell walls. |
| Epidermis | The layer of cells that makes up the out covering on a plant is dermal tissue. |
| Guard cell | The two cells that form a stoma. |
| Xylem | The water-carrying vascular tissue composed of specialized cells vessel elements and tracheids. |
| Vessel element | Tubular cells that are stacked end-to-end, forming strands of xylem. |
| Tracheid | Long, cylindrical cells with pitted ends. |
| Phloem | The main food-carrying tissue. |
| Sieve tube member | Contains cytoplasm but lacks a nucleus and ribosomes when it is mature. |
| Companion cell | Each with a nucleus. |
| Ground tissue | Consist of parenchyma, collenchyma, and nd sclerenchyma cells and have diverse functions. |
| Root cap | The tip of a root is covered. |
| Cortex | Some root epidermal cells produce root hairs that absorb water and dissolved minerals. |
| Endodermis | At the inner boundary of the cortex is a layer of cells. |
| Pericycle | The layer of cells directly next to the endodermis toward the center of the root. |
| Petiole | The blade might be attached to the stem by a stalk. |
| Palisade mesophyll | They contain many chloroplasts and make up the tissue. |
| Spongy mesophyll | consisting of irregularly-shaped, loosely packed cells with spaces surrounding them. |
| Transpiration | Water evaporates from the inside of a leaf to the outside through stomata in a process. |
| Auxin | One of the first plant hormones to be identified. |
| Gibberellins | The group of plant hormones. |
| Ethylene | The only known gaseous hormone. |
| Cytokinin | Produced in rapidly dividing cells. |
| Nastic response | A plant response that causes movement that is not dependent on the direction. |
| Tropism | A plants growth response to an external stimulus. |
