| Robert Hooke | Discovered cells from examining a piece of cork. |
| Cell Theory 1 | The theory that (1) all organisms are composed of one or more cells, (2) the cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organisms, (3) all cells from come from preexisting cells. |
| Prokaryotes | Unicellular organisms that are composed of a prokaryotic cell. Procaryotic cells lack internal membrane-bound structures. Example: Bacteria |
| Eukaryotes | Unicellular or multicellular organisms composed of eukaryotic cells, which contain a true nucleus. Example: Yeast, plants, animals. |
| Eyepiece | Contain magnifying lenses to look through on a microscope. |
| Objectives | Contain lenses that are at different magnifications on a microscope. |
| Nosepiece | The part of a microscope that the objectives are attached to. |
| Coarse Adjustment | Focuses images on low power magnification on a microscope. |
| Fine Adjustment | Sharpens image under high powered magnification on a microscope. |
| Diaphragm | Regulates the amount of light that passes through the specimen on a microscope. |
| Stage | Platform used to support the microscope slide. |
