SLSBio12Enzymes(KS)
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Activation Energy | the minimum quantity of energy that the reacting species must possess in order to undergo a specified reaction. |
| Biochemical Reaction | process in which two or more molecules interact, usually with the help of an enzyme, and produce a product |
| Coenzyme | a nonprotein compound that is necessary for the functioning of an enzyme. |
| Competitive Inhibitor | enzyme inhibition where binding of the inhibitor to the active site on the enzyme prevents binding of the substrate |
| Enzyme | a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. |
| Enzyme Activity | the catalytic effect exerted by an enzyme |
| Enzyme Concentration | the amount of enzymes taking part in the reaction |
| Heavy Metal | A metal of relatively high density |
| Induced Fit Model | A model for enzyme-substrate interaction to describe that only the proper substrate is capable of inducing the proper alignment of the active site that will enable the enzyme to perform its catalytic function |
| Metabolism | The process involving a set of chemical reactions that modifies a molecule into another for storage, or for immediate use in another reaction or as a by product |
| Non-Competitive Inhibitor | a type of enzyme inhibition where the inhibitor reduces the activity of the enzyme and binds equally well to the enzyme whether or not it has already bound the substrate |
| pH | a measure of the hydorgen ion concentration of a solution. either a basic or an acid |
| Substrate | a molecule upon which an enzyme acts (reactant) |
| Substrate Concentration | the amount of substrate taking part in the reaction |
| Thyroid | A butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in the neck that is found on both sides of the trachea. It secretes the hormone thyroxine which controls the rate of metabolism. |
| Thyroxin | Hormone produced by the thyroid glands to regulate metabolism by controlling the rate of oxidation in cells |
| Vitamins | An essential low molecular weight organic compound required in trace amounts for normal growth and metabolic processes. They usually serve as components of coenzyme systems. |
