Chapter 25 Vocab

What is an Animal?

TermDefinition
blastula hollow ball of cells in a layer surrounding a fluid filled space; in an animal embryo after cleavage but before the formation of the gastrula.
deuterostome animal whose mouth develops from cells other than those at the opening of the gastrula.
ectoderm layer of cells on the outer surface of the gastrula; eventually develops into the skin and nervous system of an animal.
ectotherm animal that has a variable body temperature and derives its heat from external sources.
gastrula animal embryo development stage where cells on one side of the blastula move inward forming a cavity of two or three layers of cells with an opening at one end.
mesoderm middle cell layer in the gastrula, between the ectoderm and the endoderm; develops into the muscles, circulatory system, excretory system, and in some animals, the respiratory system.
protostome animal with a mouth that develops from the opening of the gastrula.
sessile organism that is permanently attached to a surface.
acoelomate an animal with no body cavities
anterior head end of bilateral animals where sensory organs are often located.
bilateral symmetry animals with a body plan that can be divided down its length into two similar right and left halves that form mirror images of each other.
coelom fluid-filled body cavity completely surrounded by mesoderm.
dorsal upper surface of bilaterally symmetric animals
endoskeleton internal skelton; provides support, protects internal organs, and acts as an internal brace for muscles to pull aganist.
exoskeleton hard covering on the outside of some animals, including spiders and mollusks; provides a framework for support, protects soft body tissue, and provides a place for muscle attachment
invertebrate animal that does not have a backbone
posterior tail end of bilaterally symmetric animals
pseudocoelom fluid-filled body cavity partly lined with mesoderm.
radial symmetry an animals body plan that can be divided along any plane, through a central axis, into roughly equaled halves
symmetry a term that describes the arrangement of body structures
ventral lower surface of bilaterally symmetric animals
vertebrate an animal with an endoskeleton and a backbone.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
