SLS Bio12 Enzyme ac
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| activation energy | energy that must be added to get a reaction started, which is recovered as the reaction proceeds |
| biochemical reaction | Chemical reactions taking plce in biological systems - animals and plants |
| coenzyme | nonprotein organic molecule that aids the action of the enzyme to which it is loosely bound |
| competitive inhibitor | binding of the inhibitor to the active site on the enzyme prevents binding of the substrate |
| enzyme | large biological molecules responsible for the thousands of metabolic processes that sustain life. |
| enzyme activity | measure of the quantity of active enzyme present and is thus dependent on conditions - Enzyme activity = moles of substrate converted per unit time = rate × reaction volume |
| enzyme concentration | how much enzyme you have in a given amount of solution |
| heavy metal | A metal of relatively high density |
| induced fit model | A model for enzyme-substrate interaction to describe that only the proper substrate is capable of inducing the proper alignment of the active site that will enable the enzyme to perform its catalytic function. |
| metabolism | the set of life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of living organisms |
| non-competitve inhibitor | type of enzyme inhibition where the inhibitor reduces the activity of the enzyme and binds equally well to the enzyme whether or not it has already bound the substrate. |
| pH | measure of the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution |
| substrate concentration | concentration of the molecules an enzyme works on. |
| thyroid | controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones |
| thyroxin | responsible for regulation of metabolism |
| vitamins | is an organic compound required by an organism as a vital nutrient in limited amounts. |
