on thurs.

TermDefinition
Atom the basic units of matter
Element something made of one type of matter
Compound are made when different elements bond together
Atomic Number the number of protons of the nucleus in the atom
Atomic Mass the average mass of atoms in the element
Organic Compounds compounds that contain carbon and hydrogen
Inorganic Compounds compounds that don't contain carbon and hydrogen together
Carbohydrates elements-carbon, hydrogen, oxygen examples-sugar, starch, cellulose function-energy for cell processes building block-simple sugars
Lipid elements-carbon,hydrogen,oxygen examples-fats,oils,waxes function-store and releases large amounts of energy, used to make cell membranes building blocks-fatty acids and glycerol
Protein elements-carbon,hydrogen,oxygen,nitrogen examples-hair,skin,enzymes function-used to build cell parts building blocks-amino acids
Nucleic Acid elements-carbon,hydrogen,and oxygen examples-fats,oils,waxes function-store and release large amounts of energy
Diffusion the movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to areas of less concentration until it reaches the equilibrium
Osmosis the diffusion of water through a membrane
Selective Permeability The property of a membrane or other material that allows some substances to pass through it more easily than others.
Equilibrium When molecules spread evenly
Passive Transport the movement of materials across the cell membranes without the use of energy from high to low concentration
Active Transport the movement of materials across the cell membrane from low to high concentrations using energy
Endocytosis cell membrane surrounds large particles and bring them into the cell.(proteins do this.)
Exocytosis large molecule are packaged in vesicles and remove from cell by fusing to the cell membrane(proteins do this.)
Proton positively charges particle in the nucleus of the atom
Neutron particle in the nucleus that has about the same mass as a proton but has no charge
Electron negatively charged particle surrounding the nucleus of the atom

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
