Soil formation & Soil conservation
| Term | Definition |

| Soil | Formed from the weathering of rocks, decomposed organic matter and minerals. |
| Contour Plowing | Plowing across a slope while following the contour lines of the land. Prevents water run-off, and thus prevents soil erosion. |
| Crop Rotation | A series of different crops planted one after the other in the same soil area to prevent the depletion of nutrients. |
| Terracing | Dividing a slope into a steplike system of flat narrow fields to slow run off, A series of terraces/steps. |
| No-tilling Farming | The planting of crops without plowing in order to conserve soil fertility. |
| Soil consevation | Methods used to preserve soil against erosion, and the maintenance of fertilizing crops. |
| Cover crop | Crops that cover and protect the soil from erosion. |
| Soil nutrients | Provides vitams for plant growth from the soil in the form of minerals and other inorganic matter. |
| Bedrock | Bottom solid layer of soil |
| Soil structure | The arrangement of the particles in the soil determined by the way in which individual soil granules clump or bind together. |
| Soil texture | The make-up of the soil according to the proportions of sand, silt, and clay present. |
| Weathering | The breaking down of rocks, soils and minerals. |
