Ch. 7: Disc. Of Cell
Section 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Wall | A fairly rigid structure located outside the plasma membrane that provides additional support and protection. |
| Cell Membrane | The flexible boundary between the cell and its environment, to allow a steady supply of nutrients(glucose, amino acids, lipds, etc.) to come into the cell no matter what the external conditions are. |
| Cellulose | A glucose polymer that forms the cell walls of plants and gives plants structural support. |
| Glucose | A monosaccharide sugar the blood that serves as the major energy source of the body; it occurs in most plant and animal tissue. |
| Homeostasis | Organism's regulation of it's interval environment to maintain conditions suitable for survival. |
| Selectively Permeable | A process in which a membrane allows some molecules to pass through while keeping others out. |
| Lipid | Large organic compounds made mostly of carbon and hydrogen with a small amount of oxygen, are insoluble in water and used by cells for energy storage, insulation, and protective coatings. Ex. fats, oils waxes, etc. |
| Phospholipid | Has a glycerol backbone, two fatty acid chains, and a phosphate group. The plasma membrane is composed of a phospholipid bilayer, which has two layers of phospholipids back-to-back. |
| Hydrophobic | Unable to dissolve in water. |
| Hydrophilic | Readily absorbing or dissolving in water. |
| Fluid Mosaic Model | The model of the plasma membrane. |
| Amino Acids | Basic building blocks of of protein molecules. |
| Protein | Large, complex polymer essential to all life; provides structure for tissues and organs and helps carry out cell metabolism. |
