Chapter 1

Understanding biodiversity based on Nelson Education's Gr.11 Biology textbook.

QuestionAnswer
What is diversity? The number and variety of species and ecosystems on Earth.
What is a species? All organisms capable of breeding freely with each other under natural conditions.
True or false? Species can breed with another species. False, animals usually do not interbreed.
Fill in the blank. Two plants that appear to be distinct species may occasionally undergo _________ under natural conditions, forming a cross between the two species. Hybridization.
What is morphology based on? Physical appearance or characteristics.
What are evolutionary changes? The physical and behavioural changes that occur in entire populations of a species over time.
Genetic variability among organisms is known as? Genetic diversity.
What is the difference between heterotrophs and autotrophs? Heterotrophs cannot produce their own food, while autotrophs can.
What is species diversity? The variety of species in an ecosystem and the number of individuals within each of those species.
The range of physical shapes and sizes within a habitat or ecosystem is known as? Structural diversity.
What does structural diversity do? It create microhabitats with a variety of abiotic conditions.
True or false? An ecosystem with many large populations is considered more diverse than an ecosystem made up of smaller populations. True, the larger the population of a species, the more interactions it will have.
In what ways does the loss of human diversity affect humans? - Threatens our food supply - Eliminates sources of natural medicines and potential new medicines - Impacts tourism and forestry economically - Can cause serious disruptions in biogeochemical cycles
True or false? Species are independent. False, all species depend on other species in a variety of ways for their own survival.
What is the science of classifying living things? Taxonomy.
How are species named? Through the process of binomial nomenclature, they are given a unique two-word species name.
How are species grouped together in traditional taxonomy? They are grouped together according to shared characteristics.
How did Carl Linnaeus group species? He used taxonomic ranks or levels (taxon, plural: taxa).
What is the order of the taxa? Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
