Seasons

Rotation/Revolution/Seasons

QuestionAnswer
The study of the moon, stars, and other objects in space. Astronomy
The imaginary line that passes through Earth’s center and the North and South poles. Axis
The spinning of Earth on its axis. Rotation
The movement of one object around another object. Revolution
The path that Earth follows around the Sun. Orbit
How long does it take for Earth to complete one rotation? 24 hours
Earth's orbit is not quite circular, instead it is slightly elongated circle or ___________. Ellipse
How long does it take for Earth to complete one revolution? 365 1/4 days
Earth's rotation causes _____________ and ____________. Day and Night
Earth rotates from _____________ to ____________. (Hint: it's a direction) West to East
Does the Sun actually move across the sky throughout the day? No, Earth's rotation makes it appear to move from east to west across the sky.
Why does Earth have seasons? Because Earth revolves around the Sun on a tilted axis.
During the summer, the Northern Hemisphere is getting more ____________ sunlight. Direct
During the winter, the Northern Hemisphere is getting __________ direct sunlight. Less
During which season will NJ have the longest hours of sunlight? Summer
During which season will NJ have the shortest hours of sunlight? Winter
If we are having spring in the Northern Hemisphere, what season would it be in the Southern Hemisphere? Fall
A ________________ is when the Sun is farthest north or south of the equator. This is when one of the poles is tilted toward the Sun and the other is tilted away. Solstice
A(n) _______________________ occurs when neither pole is tilted toward or away from the Sun. Equinox
Why are there large ice glaciers near the poles? Because the poles receive the least amount of direct sunlight and have the coldest temperatures on Earth.
Why are there tropical plants near the equator? Because the equator is always getting direct sunlight, so temperatures there are always warm. This allows tropical plants to grow there year-round.
Would it be warmer directly under a heat lamp or to the side of a heat lamp? Why? Directly beneath it. The heat comes down at a more direct angle, so the heat is more concentrated in that area.
Is the angle of the tilt different at different points in Earth's revolution? No
Is the North Pole always pointed toward a particular star? If so, which one? Yes, the North Star.
Mars's axis is tilted at about the same angle as Earth's axis. Do you think Mars has seasons? Yes. Mars has seasons because its north and south pole are pointed toward or away from the Sun at different times during its revolution.
During which season, winter or summer, will your shadow be the longest? Why? Winter, because the Sun is lower in the sky so your shadow will appear longer.
During which season, winter or summer, will your shadow be the shortest? Why? Summer, because the Sun is directly overhead. This means your shadow will be very short.
