River processes

Moving water in the form of rivers. Also (shaping the landscape)

QuestionAnswer
What is a drainage basin? A drainage basin is the area of land in witch the river will flow, it is posisioned in a valley seperated by a ridge called a watershed.(Two drainage basins will be located at each si9de of the watershed or ridge)
What is erosion? The removal of rock and regolith. (soon to be carried downstream)
What is transportation? This the removal of eroded material. (it will be washed downstream)
What is deposition? In the rivers lower course the water would of slowed dramaticly, this means the river will be unable to carry its load, the river will drop its load on the river bed, this is called deposition.
What is the discharge? This is the volume of water carried by the river at the time, the more discharge the more the river will erode and transport regolith.
What is the gradient? This is the steepness of the river course, the steeper the gradient the faster the river will flow.
Can the river be affected by the roughness of the bed and banks? Yes, due to the extra friction the river w2ill slow and lose its energy.
What is hydraulic action? This is the erosion that is caused by the force of moving water.
What is cavitation? This is also a form of hydraulic action, this is when air bubbles in the water collaspe, this will send out tiny shock waves that will weaken the banks of the river.
What is abrasion? Abrasion is when the river uses the force of its load to erode the bed and banks.
