| Term | Definition |

| Weathering | Weathering is the process by which rocks on or near the surface of the earth are broken down or decayed in situ(i their original position). |
| Physical Weathering | Physical weathering is the breakdown of rock into smaller particles, called regolith, by physical forces. |
| Chemical Weathering | The decomposition of rocks due to the way the minerals in the rock react when the come into contact with water or the atmosphere. |
| Carbonation | When rainwater and carbon dioxide mix to form a weak carbonic acid |
| Clint | Flat slab of limestone between grikes. |
| Grike | Joints are widened and deepened between the clints to form a series of fissures called grikes. |
| Limestone Pavement | A large flat area of limestone that has had its soil cover removed and been exposed at the surface over a long period of time. |
| Stalactite | An icicle-like mineral (calcite) formation that hangs from the ceiling of a cave. |
| Stalagmite | When the water hits the floor of the cavern the carbon dioxide evaporates and deposits of calcite build upwards from the ground to soon form a stalagmite. |
| Permeable | When water or a liquid is able to pass through a rock. |
| Soluble | When something is able to dissolve in water |
| Swallow Hole | When joints become sufficiently wide to form a downward passage |
