| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Activation Energy | The amount of energy (expressed in joules) that is needed to convert all the molecules in one mole of a reacting substance from a ground state to the transition state. |
| Biochemical Reaction | the process in which two or more molecules interact, usually with the help of an enzyme, and produce a product. |
| Coenzyme | A small molecule (not a protein but sometimes a vitamin) essential for the activity of some enzymes |
| Competitive Inhibitor | a form of enzyme inhibition where binding of the inhibitor to the active site on the enzyme prevents binding of the substrate and vice versa. |
| Enzyme | Enzymes are biological molecules that catalyze (i.e., increase the rates of) chemical reactions. |
| Enzyme Activity | A measure of the ability of an enzyme to catalyze a specific reaction. |
| Enzyme Concentration | Enzyme concentration is the level of enzymes in the body |
| Heavy Metal | a metal of relatively high density, or of high relative atomic weight. |
| Induced Fit Model | oth enzyme and active site change shape so only a specific substrate bind to the enzyme. |
| Metabolism | Chemical processes occurring within a living cell or organism that are necessary for the maintenance of life. In metabolism some substances are broken down to yield energy for vital processes while other substances, necessary for life, are synthesized. |
| Non-Competitive Inhibitor | a molecule binds to an enzyme somewhere other than the active site. |
| pH | The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is and ranges from 0 to 14. |
| Substrate | The substance acted upon by an enzyme. |
| Substrate Concentration | So the substrate concentration is the concentration of the molecules an enzyme works on. |
| Thyroid | a large ductless gland in the neck that secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism. |
| Thyroxin | the main hormone produced by the thyroid gland, acting to increase metabolic rate and so regulating growth and development. |
| Vitamins | any of a group of organic compounds that are essential for normal growth and nutrition |
