Cells the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism, typically microscopic and consisting of cytoplasm and a nucleus enclosed in a membrane.
Anton Von Leeuwenhoek Dutch pioneer microscopist who was among the first to recognize cells in animals and who gave the first accurate descriptions of microbes and spermatozoa and blood corpuscles
Robert Hooke English scientist who formulated the law of elasticity and proposed a wave theory of light and formulated a theory of planetary motion and proposed the inverse square law of gravitational attraction and discovered the cellular structure of cork
Cell Theory the theory that cells form the fundamental structural and functional units of all living organisms
Prokaryotes a microscopic single-celled organism that has neither a distinct nucleus with a membrane nor other specialized organelles.
Eukaryotes an organism consisting of a cell or cells in which the genetic material is DNA in the form of chromosomes contained within a distinct nucleus.
Eyepiece the lens or group of lenses that is closest to the eye in a microscope
Objectives lens system
Nosepiece The part of a microscope, often rotatable, to which one or more objective lenses are attached.
Coarse Adjustment A means of moving the body tube and objective towards or away from the slide, to bring the specimen into rough focus
Fine Adjustment part of the microscope that is used for focusing finer details
Diaphragm different sized holes and is used to vary the intensity and size of the light.
Stage were the specimen is held.
Cell Wall a rigid layer of polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of the cells of plants, fungi, and bacteria. In the algae and higher plants, it consists mainly of cellulose.
Cell Membrane the semipermeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell.
