Test #2

Evidence for Evolution

QuestionAnswer
How are organisms similar? They have inherited their traits from a common ancestor
What is a theory? Is a conceptional framework that explains observations and allow us to make predictions
Evolution is the theory that unifies what? Biology
What should we consider when we examine the evidence for evolution? Can the observations be equally explained by the theory of special creation (God)
Fossil Examples Shark Tooth, Trilobite, Extinct giant shark, Fossil Fish
Fossil provide what? Ancestral Evidence
Example of Ancestral Evidence Pelvic bones- provides attachment sites for hind legs
Older fossils are less complex than Younger fossils
Younger fossils are more similar to what than older fossils? Modern fossils
Don't see what in old rocks? New forms
Can see changes in some lines of fossils Gradually in modern forms
Would special creation explain these observations? No, they would say "that is what God says"
Observations of fossils help understand... Evolutionary theory
Comparative Morphology Similar and vestigial structures
Homology Similarity in characteristics resulting from a shared ancestry
Examples of vestigial structures ---
Texas Blind Salamander They are blind b/c they live in the dark
Vampire Bats Molars
Whales and snakes Pelvic bones
Calves Wisdom teeth
Vestigial structures evolved from... Ancestors
Developmental Similarities Humpback Whale and Dolphins (hind legs)
All living organisms have what? DNA, ribosomes to make protein, and genetic code
How is phylogeny developed? Morphology data
Cytochrome C is an important enzyme of what? Energy Metabolism
Organisms in a similar area are closely related to other organisms. Why? B/c they are evolved from common ancestors in that area
Darwin reasons that Galapagos mockingbirds differ b/c... They share a common ancestor
Selective Breeding (Artificial Selection) Great Dane, Poodles, and Golden Retriever
Detailed example of evolution in nature Darwin's medium ground finch
What is disease A condition in which body health is impaired
What causes communicable disease (bacteria)? Transfer from one person to another
How do our bodies fight diseases? Immune system produces cells that kills foreign invaders
What do we do medically to fight infections? A variety of drugs and antibiotics
What are antibiotics? Chemical that kill bacteria, NOT viruses.
Types of antibiotics Penicillin
If a mutation protects the infected cell from antibiotic, what happens? The antibiotic does not kill the cells, they spread
Is antibiotic resistance a public health problem? Yes
What can we do? Use antibiotics less frequently, us not for viral infections, and finish the prescription
Long-term goals for antibiotics Develop new antibiotics and vaccines
