Animals and Plants
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is structural adaptation? | Physical features or characteristics that help an organism survive Ex. Eating, Movement, Nutrition, Circulation, Camouflage/Mimicry |
| What is behavioral adaptation? | Actions or behaviors exhibited by an organism that helps them to survive Ex. Instincts/Learned, Communication, Pheromones, Territorial Defense, Mating, Coloration, Migration, Hibernation |
| What is reproductive adaptation? | Reproductive mechanism or type that helps the species survive Ex. Producing seeds, Laying eggs |
| What is tropism? | Movement of an organism towards a stimulus |
| What is phototropism? | Movement of an organism toward or away from a source of light |
| What is geotropism? | Movement of an organism due to gravity (roots grow downward (+) stems grow upward (-)) |
| What are carnivorous plants? | Eat insects for nutrients, adapted to areas of nutrient-poor soil |
| What are spermatophytes? | Plants that produce seeds |
| What is xylem? | Tissue that transports water and dissolved minerals from root to stem/leaves |
| What is phloem? | Tissue that transports food (sugar) from photosynthetic cells to the rest of the plant |
| What is a stamen? | Male part of the flower where pollen is located |
| What is an anther? | Pollen production |
| What is a carpel? | Female part of the flower where pollen is received and the ovary is located |
| What is a stigma? | Receives pollen |
| What is phototropism? | Movement of an organism toward or away from a source of light |
| What is geotropism? | Movement of an organism due to gravity (roots grow downward (+) stems grow upward (-)) |
| What is an ovule? | Becomes a seed when fertilized, located inside the ovary |
| What is an angiosperm? | Plants that produce enclosed seeds (flowers) |
| What is a gymnosperm? | Plants that produce unenclosed seeds (conifers) |
| What is external reproduction? | Eggs are fertilized outside of the body |
| What are some advantages/disadvantages of external reproduction? | Advantages: ability to produce large numbers of offspring Disadvantages: eggs are basically unprotected, less developed |
| What is internal reproduction? | Eggs are fertilized inside the body and the embryo develops internally |
| What are some advantages/disadvantages of internal reproduction? | Advantages: offspring are more developed at birth Disadvantages: less offspring, takes more energy |
| What is the purpose of the digestive system? | Major role: Breakdown and absorb nutrients that are necessary for growth and maintenance Major organs: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines |
| What is the purpose of the respiratory system? | Major role: provide gas exchange between the blood and the environment Major organs: nose, trachea, lungs |
| What is the main purpose of the circulatory system? | Major role: transport nutrients, gases, hormones, and wastes through the body Major organs: heart, blood vessels, blood |
