Animals and Plants

What is structural adaptation? Physical features or characteristics that help an organism survive Ex. Eating, Movement, Nutrition, Circulation, Camouflage/Mimicry
What is behavioral adaptation? Actions or behaviors exhibited by an organism that helps them to survive Ex. Instincts/Learned, Communication, Pheromones, Territorial Defense, Mating, Coloration, Migration, Hibernation
What is reproductive adaptation? Reproductive mechanism or type that helps the species survive Ex. Producing seeds, Laying eggs
What is tropism? Movement of an organism towards a stimulus
What is phototropism? Movement of an organism toward or away from a source of light
What is geotropism? Movement of an organism due to gravity (roots grow downward (+) stems grow upward (-))
What are carnivorous plants? Eat insects for nutrients, adapted to areas of nutrient-poor soil
What are spermatophytes? Plants that produce seeds
What is xylem? Tissue that transports water and dissolved minerals from root to stem/leaves
What is phloem? Tissue that transports food (sugar) from photosynthetic cells to the rest of the plant
What is a stamen? Male part of the flower where pollen is located
What is an anther? Pollen production
What is a carpel? Female part of the flower where pollen is received and the ovary is located
What is a stigma? Receives pollen
What is phototropism? Movement of an organism toward or away from a source of light
What is geotropism? Movement of an organism due to gravity (roots grow downward (+) stems grow upward (-))
What is an ovule? Becomes a seed when fertilized, located inside the ovary
What is an angiosperm? Plants that produce enclosed seeds (flowers)
What is a gymnosperm? Plants that produce unenclosed seeds (conifers)
What is external reproduction? Eggs are fertilized outside of the body
What are some advantages/disadvantages of external reproduction? Advantages: ability to produce large numbers of offspring Disadvantages: eggs are basically unprotected, less developed
What is internal reproduction? Eggs are fertilized inside the body and the embryo develops internally
What are some advantages/disadvantages of internal reproduction? Advantages: offspring are more developed at birth Disadvantages: less offspring, takes more energy
What is the purpose of the digestive system? Major role: Breakdown and absorb nutrients that are necessary for growth and maintenance Major organs: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines
What is the purpose of the respiratory system? Major role: provide gas exchange between the blood and the environment Major organs: nose, trachea, lungs
What is the main purpose of the circulatory system? Major role: transport nutrients, gases, hormones, and wastes through the body Major organs: heart, blood vessels, blood
