SLS Bio12 Enzyme JW
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Activation Energy | The amount of energy (expressed in joules) that is needed to convert all the molecules in one mole of a reacting substance from a ground state to the transition state |
| Biochemical Reaction | A biochemical reaction is the process in which two or more molecules interact, usually with the help of an enzyme, and produce a product. Such a reaction may also involve the breakdown of a single reactant and the production of multiple products |
| Coenzyme | A small molecule (not a protein but sometimes a vitamin) essential for the activity of some enzymes.A cofactor molecule that helps an enzyme catalyse a particular reaction by binding with it |
| Competitive Inhibitor | inhibitor that occupies the active site of an enzyme or the binding Site of a receptor and prevents the normal substrate or ligand from binding. |
| Enzyme | Any of numerous proteins or conjugated proteins produced by living organisms and functioning as biochemical catalysts |
| Enzyme Activity | A measure of the ability of an enzyme to catalyze a specific reaction |
| Enzyme Concentration | The concentration/amount of enzymes present in a given area |
| Heavy Metal | A metal of relatively high density (specific gravity greater than about 5) or of high relative atomic weight.Any element with an atomic weight greater than twenty (twenty times the weight of hydrogen) |
| Induced Fit Model | A model for enzyme-substrate interaction to describe that only the proper substrate is capable of inducing the proper alignment of the active site that will enable the enzyme to perform its catalytic function |
| Metabolism | The process involving a set of chemical reactions that modifies a molecule into another for storage, or for immediate use in another reaction or as a by product |
| Non-Competitive Inhibitor | An inhibitory effect on a metabolic function, such as an enzyme, not based on competition for the binding site of the naturally occurring substrate, but on a different effect on the molecule whose function is being inhibited, binds to allosteric site |
| pH | It is a measure to determine the acidity or alkalinity of a solution or a substance |
| Substrate | The substance acted upon by an enzyme |
| Substrate Concentration | The concentration/amount of substrates in a given area |
| Thyroid | A butterfly-shaped endocrine gland in the neck that is found on both sides of the trachea windpipe). It secretes the hormone thyroxine which controls the rate of metabolism |
| Thyroxin | Hormone produced by the thyroid glands to regulate metabolism by controlling the rate of oxidation in cells; thyroxine is 65% iodine |
| Vitamins | An essential low molecular weight organic compound required in trace amounts for normal growth and metabolic processes. They usually serve as components of coenzyme systems |
