Ecology Exam 5

Bio 1004 University of Central Missouri

QuestionAnswer
Nutrient a chemical element required for metabolism and growth. Ex: calcium, zinc, protein
Nutrient Cycling movement of nutrients within an ecosystem
Nitrogen Fixation nitrgen is converted into a useable form
Mineral solid substanes with charcteristic chemical properties formed from geological processes
Rock collectin of different minerals
Biomagnification an increase in the concentration of a substance
Climate Change a directional change in climate over a period of several decades
Conservation Biology the scientific study f phenomena that affect the maintenance, loss, and restoratin of biodiversity
Overexploitation so many individuals are removed that a populatin cannot sustain itself. EX: cod fish were over fished and their pop. crashed. EX2: over hunting of gray wolves
Sustainability the capacity to use resources in a way that does not impair them or deminish them
Sustainable Development meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What are the two abiotic sources in which nutrients are derived? 1) Atmospheric gases or deposition 2) Minerals in ROCK
Is atmospheric gas a useable form for most organisms? Some gases are NOT useable by most organisms. They must be FIXED
What are aerosols? fine soil particles made up of solids, liquids, and gases
zin what ways are aerosols deposited into an ecosystem? aerosols fall from the atmospher due to: 1) Precipitation (Wet Fall)Rain 2) Gravity (Dry Fall)Wind
What process releases nutrients from rock? Weathering
How do nutrients leave the ecosystem? 1) convesion of gas (nitrogen cycle) 2) water runoff (leaching) 3) wind
How are nutrients cycled through an ecosystem? Nutrients pass through organisms and are released during decomposition.
Why is Detritus important? It is an important source of nutrients.
Decomposition is important because it releases nutrients as what? Simple soluble compounds. It is natures way of recycling
Does the rate of decomposition increase or decrease in warm temperatures/climates? Increase. Decompostion is faster at warm temps
Does the rate f decompotion increase or decrease with intermediate soil temperatures? Increase. Decmposition is faster with intermediate soil mistures
What zone(s) in the aquatic system have high nutrient demands? Photic zone Littoral zone
What zones are nutrients typically lst to? Benthic zone
How are nutrients in the lake replinished after being lost? during overturn
What type of lake is nutrient poor, with low productivity, and no rooted plants/algea(rock bottom)? Oligotrophic lakes
What type of lake is nutrient rich, with high productivity, and lots of rooted vegetation? Eutrophic Lakes
In what two ways does nitrogen fixation occur? High energy fixation Biological fixation
How many reservoirs are there for carbon and what are they? 4: atmosphere, ocean, land surface, sedidments and rocks
What are the reservoirs for phosphorus? rck, terrestrial soils, marine sediments
What are the reservoirs for sulfur? rck, sediments, ocean, atmosphere
What two areas can absorb excess carbon? Forest sinks and Oceans
Does extra carbon in the ocean increase carbonic acid? Yes. It also increases diffusion and acidity
Which chemical compounds produce acid rain? How do these compounds enter an ecosystem? Nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide. These componds enter the ecosystem through wet fall (rain, snow, fog)
How dose acid effect oceans? Dissolves shells, lowers ability to synthesize(grow) shells
How does acid rain effect the environment? Loss of biodiversity in aquatic systems, forest destruction, thinning of shells.
