glands and their secretions

pineal the gland that plays a major role in sexual development, sleep, and metabolism
parathyroid Increases blood levels of calcium (stimulates breakdown of bone and rate at which calcium is removed from urine and absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract)
islets of langerhans Clusters of cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, glucagon, and other hormones; also called the pancreatic islets.
thyroid Endocrine gland that helps regulate the rate of metabolism
pancreas Digestive organ that regulates the hormones Insulin and Glucagon
testes Male sex glands or gonads that produce the male sex cells - sperm
ovaries Glands that produce the egg cells and hormones
uterus A hollow muscular organ in the pelvic cavity of the female, in which the embryo is nourished and develops before birth
insulin A hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates the metabolism of sugar in the body.
glucagon A hormone secreted by the pancreatic alpha cells that increases blood glucose concentration
diabetes mellitus A condition in which the body is unable to produce enough insulin, the hormone required for the metabolism of sugar
pituitary Known as the master gland. Located in the brain and is the size of a pea. Produces hormones that regulate gorwth, development of the reproductive strucuters, and the function of the reproductive organs throughout ones life span.
endocrine system Glands secrete hormones that regulate processes such as growth, reproduction, and nutrient use (metabolism) by body cells.
gland A group of cells that secrete fluid to be used elsewhere in the body.
thyroxine Hormone secreted from the thyroid gland that promotes growth and development; increases metabolic rate in cells
metabolism Chemical reactions in living organisms that are necessary to maintain life
epinephrine A hormone of the adrenal gland that modulates the stress response. Also known as adrenaline
hormones Chemical messengers, mostly those manufactured by the endocrine glands, that are produced in one tissue and affect another
