Round A melody which is repeated by all the voice parts exactly, and can be done indefinitely.
Rubato Performed in a free tempo.
Sackbut Old English name for the medieval trombone.
Saite String.
Salantando Short strokes played in rapid tempo in the middle of the bow, so that the bow bounces on the strings.
Ripieno Section played by the Orchestra.
Rhythm The combinations of long and short sounds.
Roll Rapid alteration of strokes by the drumstick.
Root The fundamental note upon which a chord is constructed.
Rosin A preparation made from the gum of the turpentine, and applied to the hair of the violin bow to give it the nessecary grip on the strings.
