Complications in blood collection
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| 5 complications that may be encountered during the blood collection process. | *hematoma due to incorrectly inserted needle *hemolysis due to the use of incorrect gauge *hemoconcentration due to prolonged tourniquet use *inappropriate choice/use of vacuum tube/syringe for the patient's vein condition *poor needle readjustment |
| Hematoma | The area around the puncture site begins to swell; blood leaks into the tissues. |
| How does a hematoma occur? | Caused by incorrect needle insertion, puncture through the vein, or pressure on vein wall from the bevel. |
| Define hemoconcentration | the decrease in plasma volume and increase in larger cell volume |
| Causes of hemoconcentration | Caused by prolonged tourniquet application, damaged veins, excessive pressure from manipulation at puncture site, long-term IV use. |
| Lab tests to be drawn while fasting | Tests for blood glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, electrolytes, proteins. |
| Max time for tourniquet application | 60 seconds |
| Why is a time limit important for tourniquet application? | Prolonged tourniquet pressure yields increased hemoconcentration with elevated plasma, cholesterol, iron, lipid and potassium. |
| What are some reasons why you might fail to obtain blood? | *incorrect needle depth- shallow or through *incorrect bevel position - touching vein wall *failure to anchor - rolled vain |
| Why is the specimen serum red? | Hemolysis due to hematological disease, drug exposure, artificial heart valve, poor needle assembly, incorrect gauge, excessive shaking of tube. |
| If a patient is on a “blood thinner”, what might you do differently, during and after the blood draw? | Preform the venipuncture accurately, make sure patient has stopped bleeding, document the presence of a "blood thinner" in the sample. |
| What would you do if a patient where to faint while having blood drawn? | Immediately stop draw. protect the patient from a fall injury. secure the pt with assistance. make sure pt has recovered fully before permitted to leave. |
