Ch 10 Digestion

Bio B

QuestionAnswer
Digestive System A group of organs that take in food and change it into a form the body can use.
Digestion Changing of food into a usable form through a physical and chemical change
Physical Change Occurs when large food pieces are broken down into smaller pieces
Chemical Change Turns food into a form that cells can use
Enzymes Chemicals that speed up the rate of chemical change.
Glucose A type of sugar molecule found in the starch of bread
Saliva A liquid that is formed in the mouth that speeds up chemical changes in carbs
Salivary glands This empties into the mouth and speeds up the breaking down of carbs.
Esophagus A tube connecting the mouth to the stomach. Peristalsis first occurs here. Food spends the least amount of time here.
Stomach Makes Hydrochloric Acid that aids in digestion and an enzyme that changes protein.
Small Intestine Most of chemical digestion of food takes place here, food is absorbed into the blood from here.
Pancreas Makes 3 enzymes the help digest fats, proteins and carbs.
Mouth Creates a chemical that digests carbs
Stomach Creates a chemical that digests proteins
Small Intestine Creates a chemical that digests fats, carbs, and proteins
Liver Makes bile
Bile Green liquid that breaks large fat droplets in small fat droplets, this is a physical change
Gallbladder Stores Bile
Large Intestine Removes water from undigested food
Appendix Small finger like part found where the small and large intestine meet, does not do much
Villi Fingelike parts on the lining of the small intestine, contains blood vessels that carry digested food
Earthworm Has 2 openings to the digestive system
Tapeworm Does not have a digestive system
Hydra Only has 1 opening for it's digestive system
Ulcers Caused by enzymes and acids found in the stomach
Mucus Protects the stomach and intestinal linings from acids and enzymes
Heartburn Problem caused by stomach acids moving into the esophagus
Perstalsis Involuntary muscle movement that moves food through the esophagus
900 cm Length of your digestive system
Plant Eaters Have longer digestive systems
Meat Eaters Have shorter digestive systems
Water, Vitamins, Minerals Nutrients in usable form
Fats, Proteins, Carbohydrates Nutrients that must be broken down by enzymes before our body can use them
Liver, Pancreas, Gallbladder Food does not pass through these organs
Small Intestine Food spends the most time here
Liver Largest organ in the body
