SLS Bio 12

SLS Bio 12 Enzyme

TermDefinition
Activation Energy It is the energy all chemical reactions require to get them started
Biochemical Reaction All the chemical processes/reactions which take place within the living body at cellular level are termed as biochemical reactions. These reactions usually occur with the help of enzymes.
Coenzyme A small molecule (not a protein but sometimes a vitamin) essential for the activity of some enzymes.A cofactor molecule that helps an enzyme catalyse a particular reaction by binding with it.
Competitive inhibitor inhibitor that occupies the active site of an enzyme or the binding Site of a receptor and prevents the normal substrate or ligand from binding.
Enzyme a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction.
Enzyme Activity A measure of the ability of an enzyme to catalyze a specific reaction.
Enzyme Concentration The amount of enzymes in the body.
Heavy Metal a metal of relatively high density, or of high relative atomic weight.
Induced Fit Model A model for enzyme-substrate interaction to describe that only the proper substrate is capable of inducing the proper alignment of the active site that will enable the enzyme to perform its catalytic function.
Metabolism The process involving a set of chemical reactions that modifies a molecule into another for storage, or for immediate use in another reaction or as a by product.
Non-Competitive Inhibitor An inhibitory effect on a metabolic function, such as an enzyme, not based on competition for the binding site of the naturally occurring substrate, but on a different effect on the molecule whose function is being inhibited.
pH it is a measure to determine the acidity or alkalinity of a solution or a substance.
Substrate is a molecule upon which an enzyme acts.
Substrate Concentration is the concentration of the molecules an enzyme works on
Thyroid a large ductless gland in the neck that secretes hormones regulating growth and development through the rate of metabolism
Thyroxin Hormone produced by the thyroid glands to regulate metabolism by controlling the rate of oxidation in cells;
Vitamins any of a group of organic compounds that are essential for normal growth and nutrition and are required in small quantities in the diet

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
