weathering and erosion
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is weathering? | the natrual procces by which atmospheric and environmental agents, such as wind, rain and temperture changes, disintegrate and decompose rocks |
| What is mechanical weathering? | the process by which rocks break down into smaller pices by physical means |
| What is abrasion? | the grinding and wearing away of rocks surfaces through the mechanical action of other rocks or sand particles |
| What is chemical weathering? | the process by which rocks break down as a result of chemical reaction |
| What is oxidation? | a reation that removes one or more electrons from a substance such that the substance's valence oroxidation state increases;in geology, the process by which a metallic element combines with oxygen. |
| What is hydrolysis? | a chemical reaction between water and another substance to form two or more new subtance. |
| What is carbonation? | the conversion of a compound into a carbonate. |
| What is acid precipitation? | precipitation, such as rain, sleet or snow, that contains a high concentration of acids, often bcause of the atmosphere. |
| What is Differental weathering ? | the processby which softer, less weather resistant rocks wear away at a faster rate than harder, more weather resistant rocks do |
| what is soil? | a loose mixtrue of rocks fragments organic material that can support the growth of vegetation. |
| What is soli profile ? | a vertical section of soil that shows the layers of horizon. |
| What is horizon? | a horizon layer of soil that can be ditinguished from the layers above and below it;also a boundery between two rocks layers that have diffent physical properies. |
| What is humus? | dark, organic material formed in soil from the decayed remains of plants |
| What is Erosion? | a process in which the materials of earth's surface are loosened, dissolved, or worn away and transported from one place to another by a natural agent, such as wind, water, ice, or gravity. |
| What is mass movment? | the movment of a large mass of sedoment or a section of land down a slope |
| What is soliflution ? | the slow, downslope flow of soil saturated with water in areas surrounding glaciers at high elevation. |
| What is creep? | the slow downhill movment of weathered rock matrial. |
| What is land form? | a physical feature eath's surface. |
| What is Sheet erosion? | The process by which water flows over a layer of soil and removes the topsoil |
