weathering and erosion

What is weathering? the natrual procces by which atmospheric and environmental agents, such as wind, rain and temperture changes, disintegrate and decompose rocks
What is mechanical weathering? the process by which rocks break down into smaller pices by physical means
What is abrasion? the grinding and wearing away of rocks surfaces through the mechanical action of other rocks or sand particles
What is chemical weathering? the process by which rocks break down as a result of chemical reaction
What is oxidation? a reation that removes one or more electrons from a substance such that the substance's valence oroxidation state increases;in geology, the process by which a metallic element combines with oxygen.
What is hydrolysis? a chemical reaction between water and another substance to form two or more new subtance.
What is carbonation? the conversion of a compound into a carbonate.
What is acid precipitation? precipitation, such as rain,sleet or snow, that contains a high concentration of acids, often bcause of the atmosphere.
What is Differental weathering ? the processby which softer, less weather resistant rocks wear away at a faster rate than harder, more weather resistant rocks do
what is soil? a loose mixtrue of rocks fragments organic material that can support the growth of vegetation.
What is soli profile ? a vertical section of soil that shows the layers of horizon.
What is horizon? a horizon layer of soil that can be ditinguished from the layers above and below it;also a boundery between two rocks layers that have diffent physical properies.
What is humus? dark, organic material formed in soil from the decayed remains of plants
What is Erosion? a process in which the materials of earth's surface are loosened, dissolved, or worn away and transported from one place to another by a natural agent, such as wind, water, ice, or gravity.
What is mass movment? the movment of a large mass of sedoment or a section of land down a slope
What is soliflution ? the slow, downslope flow of soil saturated with water in areas surrounding glaciers at high elevation.
What is creep? the slow downhill movment of weathered rock matrial.
What is land form? a physical feature eath's surface.
What is Sheet erosion? The process by which water flows over a layer of soil and removes the topsoil
