LD BIO Additional Notes Mitosis and Asexual Reproduction
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| MITOSIS | the asexual process of dividing the hereditary material in the parent cell into two identical daughter cells. |
| CYTOKINESIS | when the cytoplasm divides |
| ASEXUAL | the type of reproduction that requires one parent and produces identical offspring |
| SEXUAL | the type of reproduction that usually has 2 parents and produces varied offspring |
| CELL CYCLE | includes interphase and the stages of mitosis |
| CHROMATIN | nuclear DNA that exists in a mass of thin, twisted threads usually found in Interphase. |
| CHROMOSOMES | rodlike structures in the nucleus that contain hereditary information usually made of 2 chromatid sisters |
| PROPHASE | doubled chromosomes (2 chromatid sisters joined by a centromere) become visible and the nuclear membrane starts to disappear while centrioles move toward opposite poles of the cell |
| CENTRIOLES | 2 tiny cylindrical bodies that spindle fibers |
| METAPHASE | when the chromosomes line up at the equator of the cell |
| ANAPHASE | when spindle fibers attach to the centromeres of chromosomes and start to pull them apart toward the poles |
| TELOPHASE | when the chromosomes uncoil to become chromatin again, the nuclear membrane reappears, cytokinesis occurs, and a cell divides into 2 daughter cells |
| CLEAVAGE | when the membrane pinches off to form two cells |
| CELL PLATE | in plant cells this helps to divide the cell during telophase |
| CYCLIN | the protein that regulates the timing of the cell cycle |
| BINARY FISSION | the type of asexual reproduction where equal division of the nucleus and cytoplasm occurs in algae, bacteria, ameba and paramecium |
| BUDDING | the type of asexual reproduction where the nucleus divides equally, but the cytoplasm does not creating bud |
| SPORULATION | the types of asexual reproduction that occurs when spores are released for example in bread mold |
| REGENERATION | the ability to regrow lost parts |
| VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION | a type of asexual reproduction that occurs in plants either naturally or artificially |
