| Classification | The grouping of objects or information based on similarities. |
| Taxonomy | The branch of biology that groups and names organisms based on studies of their different characteristics. |
| Binomial nomenclature | Two-word naming system created by Linnaeus used to identify species. |
| Genus | The first word of the organism consist of a group of similar species. Always capitalized. |
| Specific epithet | The second word which sometimes describes the characteristics of the organism. Always lowercase. the last name of species. |
| Family | The next larger taxon in the biological classification system. Consist of a group of similar genera. |
| Order | A taxon of similar families. |
| Phylum | A taxon of similar classes. |
| Division | Taxonomic grouping of similar classes. |
| Kingdom | A taxon of similar phyla or division. |
| Archaebacteria | Prokaryotes that live in harsh areas like hot springs/swamps. Most of the areas they live are oxygen free. |
| Eubacteria | Prokaryotes with strong cell walls. Auto/heterotroph. Ex. are strep and botulism. |
| Protists | Eukaryotes that lack complex organ system & live in wet areas. Auto/heterotrophic. Ex. are slime mold, paramecium, and kelp. |
| Fungi | Uni/multicellular eukaryotes that absorbs nutrients from organic matter. Ex. are mushrooms or morels. |
| Plants | Multicellular, phosynthetic, eukayotic organisms. Contain chloroplast & cell walls made of cellulose (woody substance.) 250,000 known species. |
| Animals | Multicellular heterotrophs. Have developed nervous systems. DO NOT have cell walls. Have multiple feedind habits. |

| Taxa | Groups that organisms are ranked in ranges from blood characteristics to specific. The broader the taxa, the more species. |
| How did it start? | 300 BC with Aristotle naming things as plants and animals. |
