Classification The grouping of objects or information based on similarities.
taxonomy is the branch of biology that groups and names organisms based on studies of their different characteristics.
binomial nomenclature a two word naming system that that Linneaus developed to identify the genus of organsisms
genus consists of a group of similar species
specific epithet the second word of binomial nomenclature that usually describes characteristics
family the second largest class of the biological classification system, consists of a group of similar genera
order is a taxon of similar families
class a taxon of similar orders
phylum is a taxon of similar classes
division plant taxonomists use instead of phylum
kingdom a taxon of similar phyla of divisions
eubacteria very strong cell walls and a less complex genetic makeup than found in acheabacteria or eukaryotes
acheabacteria unicellular microorganisms that are distinct from bacteria and eukaryotes, can live in extereme conditions
protists a eukaryote that lacks complex organ systems and lives in moist enviroments
fungi is either a multicellular eukaryote that absorbs nutrients from organic materials in the enviroment
plants multicellular, photosynthetic eukaryotes
animals multicellular heterotrophs. able to move from place to place with their own nervous system
