| Continental Drift | Alfred Wegener’s theory that proposed that Earth’s continents had once been joined as a single landmass that broke apart and sent the continents adrift. |
| Pangaea | The name Alfred Wegener gave to the supercontinent he believed existed when all the continents were joined together. |
| Magnetometer | A device that can detect small changes in magnetic fields. |
| Magnetic field | The portion of space near a magnetic body, or a body carrying an electric current, within which magnetic forces, due to the body or current, can be detected |
| Magnetic reversal | When the flow of molten iron in the outer core changes resulting in Earth’s magnetic field changing direction. |
| Paleomagnetism | The study of the history of Earth’s magnetic field. |
| SONAR | A machine used by scientists to send a signal to the ocean floor, timing how long it takes for the sound to reach the bottom and return to the surface as an echo (Sound Navigation and Ranging). |
| Topography | Variations in elevation of the crust. |
| Ocean ridge | Vast underwater mountain chains that run along the Earth’s ocean floor like seams on a baseball. |
| Deep-sea trench | A narrow, elongated depression on the seafloor. |
| Isochron | A map of imaginary lines on the ocean floor connecting areas of the same age. |
| Seafloor spreading | The theory that states that new ocean crust is formed at ocean ridges and destroyed at deep-sea trenches. |
| Symmetry | an exact matching of form on opposite sides of a boundary |
