What is classification? The grouping of objects or information based on similarities.
What is taxonomy? The branch of biology that groups and names organisms based on their characteristics.
What is binomial nomenclature? A two-word naming system developed by Linnaeus.
What is a genus? The first word of the naming system that consists of a group of similar species.
What is specific epithet? The second word of the naming system that describes a characteristic of the organism.
What is a family? Consists of a group of similar genera.
What is an order? Taxon of similar families.
What is a class? Taxon of similar orders.
What is a phylum? Taxon of similar classes
What is a division? Used by plant taxonomists to replace phylum.
What is a kingdom? Taxon of similar phyla or divisions.
What is phylogeny? The evolutionary history of a species.
What is cladistics? One biological system of classification based on phylogeny
What is a cladogram? A branching diagram of the phylogeny of species, they are important tools for understanding scientific concepts.
What is eubacteria? Prokaryotes that have ave very strong cell walls and can be autotrophs or heterotrophs
What are protists? eukaryotes that lack complex organ systems and live in wet areas and can be heterotrophs or autotrophs
What is fungus? uni/multicellular eukaryote that absorbs nutrients from organic matter like mushrooms
What are plants? multicellular, photosynthetic, eukaryotic organisms that contain chloropasts and cell walls made of a woody substance
What are animals? Multicellular heterotrophs that have nervous systems, no cell walls, and multiple feeding habits
