TermDefinition
Dominant Refers to an allele that masks the effect of a recessive allele paired with it
Genotype Particular set of alleles carried by an individual
Phenotype An Individual's observable traits
Heterozygous Having two different alleles of a gene
Homozygous Identical alleles of a gene
Hybrid Offspring of a cross between two individuals that breed true for different forms of a trait; a heterozygous individual.
locus location of a gene on a chromosome
Recessive Refers to an allele with an effect that is masked by a dominant allele on the homologous chromosome
Monohybrid cross Cross between two individuals identically heterozygous for one gene; for example Aa x Aa
Law of segregation Members of each pair of genes on homologous chromosomes end up in different gametes during meiosis
Testcross Method of determining genotype by tracking a trait in the offspring of a cross between an individual of unknown genotype an individual known to be homozygous
Codominant Two alleles that are both fully in heterozygous and neither is dominant over the other
Epistasis Effect in which a trait is influenced by the products of multiple genes
Incomplete dominance One allele isnt dominant over another, so the heterozygous
Multiple allele system Gene for which three or more alleles persist in a population
pleiotropic refers to a gene that influences multiple traits
