Cell Membrane

Cell Membrane and Transport

TermDefinition
Selectively Permeable the ability of the cell membrane to allow some substance to enter/leave, while keeping in/out others
Equilibrium A state of balance and homeostatis
Concentration The amount of substance dissolved into another (i.e. amount of salt dissolved in water)
Osmotic pressure The amount of water pressure inside a cell
Active Transport The movement of molecules across the cell membrane that requires energy
Passive Transport The movement of molecules across the cell membrane that do not require energy
Diffusion a form of passive transport. The movement of molecules across the cell membrane that does not requires energy
Osmosis The movement of WATER, a form of passive transport. The movement of molecules across the cell membrane that does not requires energy
Facilitated Diffusion The movement of molecules that require the use of carrier proteins to enter/exit the cell
Exocytosis The movement of large molecules out of the cell, a form of active transport
Endocytosis The movement of large molecules into the cell, a form of active transport
Pinocytosis The movement of liquid across the cell membrane
Phagocytosis The movement of solids across the cell membrane
Vesicle A protein structure inside the cell membrane that helps transport substances across it
Carrier Protein A type of protein inside the cell membrane used to to transport substance through it
Ion Channel A type of protein inside the cell membrane used to to transport ions through it
Sodium Potassium Pump A type of protein inside the cell membrane used to to transport 3 sodium ions out of the cell and 2 potassium ion into teh cell. Active transport
Hypotonic The condition where the water concentration is higher inside the cell than out
Hypertonic The condition where the water concentration is lower inside the cell than out
Isotonic The condition where the water concentration is equal inside and outside of the cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
