| Class | Taxonomic grouping of similar orders |
| Classification | Grouping of objects or information based on similarities |
| Division | Taxonomic grouping of similar classes; term used instead of phyla by plant taxonomists |
| Family | A taxonomic category of related organisms ranking below an order and above a genus. A family usually consists of several genera. See Table at taxonomy |
| Genus | a principal taxonomic category that ranks above species and below family |
| Kingdom | The highest classification into which living organisms are grouped in Linnean taxonomy, ranking above a phylum |
| Order | A taxonomic rank used in classifying organisms, generally below the class, and comprised of families sharing a set of similar nature or character |
| Phylum | A primary division of a kingdom, as of the animal kingdom, ranking next above a class in size |
| Specific Epithet | A word in the scientific name of an animal or plant following the name of the genus and denoting a species, variety, or other division of the genus |
| Taxonomy | the branch of science concerned with classification, esp. of organisms; systematics |
| Cladistics | a method of classification of animals and plants according to the proportion of measurable characteristics that they have in common. It is assumed that the higher the proportion of characteristics that two organisms share |
| Cladogram | a branching diagram showing the cladistic relationship between a number of species |
| Eubacteria | a bacterium of a large group typically having simple cells with rigid cell walls and often flagella for movement. The group comprises the “true” bacteria and cyanobacteria, as distinct from archaebacteria |
| Fungus | any of a group of unicellular, multicellular, or syncytial spore-producing organisms feeding on organic matter, including molds, yeast, mushrooms, and toadstools |
| Phylogeny | the branch of biology that deals with phylogenesis |
