The Age of The Earth

Use this to study our Unit on the Age of The Earth and The Geologic Time Scale

What law do we apply that tells us that the layers of rock on the bottom of a sequence of rock layers are the oldest? The Law of Superposition
By examining the above rock layers and comparing one rock layer to the next to get the general age of the rock is called what relative age
If scientists wanted to get the exact year of the rock or fossils found within the rock layers they would use? radiometric dating
Earth is about how old? 4.6 billion years old
Dinosaurs went extinct about how many years ago? 65 million
The theory that the same forces that are shaping our Earth now were shaping our Earth in the past is known as: The Law of Uniformitarianism
The amount of time it takes for ½ a sample of radioactive element to decay into another form Half life
Which era were the dinosaurs around in? Mesozoic
What were the predominant features of the Paleozoic Era? Invertebrates
What event is thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs? Meteroid
Why do we think a meteroid wiped out the dinosaurs? Becuase radioactive elements that are normally only found in space are found in rocks layers that are 65 million years old.
