4. Materials
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Raw materials | Are substances that are extracted directly from natural objects |
| Materials | Are the result of transforming raw materials by physical and chemical processes |
| Manufactured goods | Objects created by humans to satisfy their needs ans improve their standard of living |
| Physical properties | Properties relate to how materials react to external stimuli |
| Electrical properties | How a material behaves when an electric current pass through it |
| Electrical conductor | Materials that allow an electric current to pass through them |
| Electrical insulator | Materials that don´t allow an electric current to pass through them |
| Thermal properties | How a material behaves when heat pass through it |
| Thermal conductor | Materials that allow heat to pass through them |
| Thermal insulator | Materials that don´t allow heat to pass through them |
| Expansion and contraction | The material increases it size when temperature is increased and reduces it size when temperature is decreased |
| Fusibility | The capacity of changing from solid to liquid when the temperature is increased. |
| Weld | Join pieces together by using heat or chemicals |
| Acoustic properties | How a material behaves when sound tries to pass through it |
| Acoustic conductor | Materials that allow sound to pass through them |
| Acoustic insulator | Materials that don't allow sound to pass through them |
| Magnetic properties | How a material behaves when a magnet is near it |
| Magnetism | Materials that attract other metallic materials |
| Optical properties | How a material behaves when light pass through it |
| Opaque | Materials that don't allow light to pass through them |
| Transparent | Materials that allow light to pass through them, and objects behind them can be clearly seen |
| Translucent | Materials that allow light to pass through them, but objects behind them can't be clearly seen |
| Mechanical properties | How a material behave when external forces are applied |
| Mechanical strength | How a material behaves when a force acts upon it |
| Elastic | Materials that return to their original forms after a force that has changed their shapes is removed |
| Plastic | Materials that remain permanently deformed after a force has changed their shapes |
| Malleable | Materials that can be spread into sheets or films |
| Ductile | Materials that can be formed into filaments |
| Hard | Materials that can't be easily scratched |
| Tough | Materials that can't be easily broken |
| Brittleness | Property of materials that can be easily broken |
| Density | Relation between the mass of an object and its volume |
| Porosity | Property of some materials that can absorve or release liquids or gases |
| Permeable | Materials that allow water to pass through them |
| Impermeable | Materials that don't allow water to pass through them |
| Chemical properties | Properties that we can see when the chemical composition of a material changes becausse it interacts with other substances |
| Oxidation | what happens when a mineral reacts with oxygen in the air or water |
| Ecological properties | Properties related with the impact that a material causes on the environment |
| Recyclable | Materials that can be reused |
| Toxic | Harmful materials |
| Biodegradable | Materials that decompose naturally |
| Renewable materials | Materials that can be regenerated |
